The UN Youth Tasmania State Conference is the peak event in the UN Youth Tasmania calendar. It brings together more than sixty of Tasmania’s brightest young minds to engage in model United Nations debates, personal and professional development as well as a variety of educational and social activities.

Delegates in General Assembly debate
Students gain an enormous amount from being able to network and engage with like-minded young people, as well as being exposed to the potential to contribute to their local, national and international communities.
One of the central aspects of State Conference is that delegates are given an opportunity to engage in Model United Nations debates. Delegates are allocated a country and they debate current international issues, representing their country’s perspective. Debate takes place over two days, on the first of which delegates are split into four committees; the Security Council, the Human Rights Council and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The second day of Model UN debate is devoted to the General Assembly. In all Model UN debates we follow the rules of procedure and style of the UN as closely as possible. In committees, delegates debate specilised issues. The Security Council, made up of five permanent and ten non-permanent members, debates issues of international peace and security. The Human Rights Council debates issues of fundamental human rights, and their infringements worldwide. ECOSOC debates issues including living standards, employment, health and well-being, economy and culture.
The General Assembly debate will be the centrepiece of the 2013 State Conference. The General Assembly is the arm of the UN in which all member states are represented. At State Conference 2013 it will comprise a full day of debate involving every delegate at the conference. Delegates get to use the debating and negotiation skills acquired over the previous four days in a fun and unique environment.
